In its traditional round of monthly Windows updates, released this Tuesday (8), Microsoft fixed no less than 87 vulnerabilities in the operating system. The latest Patch Tuesday fixes include patches for six security holes considered critical by the company, as well as two zero-day flaws, which were already being exploited in attacks.
Of the pair of most serious breaches, only one had been publicly revealed before the update. This is a zero-day vulnerability in Microsoft Office that had already received fixes before, but was once again exploited by cybercriminal groups in industrial espionage operations. From documents that have online content attached, opening allowed code to be executed remotely and prevented danger alerts from being displayed to users.
The second vulnerability was in applications based on .NET and Visual Studio, making it possible for criminals to carry out denial of service attacks. Microsoft did not reveal any further details on the matter, as normally happens in zero-day breaches, to prevent more criminal groups from using exploitation techniques.
The six security flaws considered critical by Microsoft also include openings that allow remote code execution from applications such as Outlook and Teams. In this context, in fact, the most recent Tuesday of updates fixed 23 vulnerabilities in this category in different Windows systems.
When combined, the breaches could lead to different types of attacks against Windows systems, ranging from data theft to ransomware contamination or lateral movement across connected networks. Because of this, other bugs related to the elevation of privileges in the operating system, falsification of status and information, denial of service or preventing the display of security alerts were also fixed.
The update is now available and is recommended for all users of the platform, especially corporate users or those connected to highly critical systems. The complete list of fixes was made available by Microsoft, which indicates agility in applying the update, in order to prevent more attacks from happening now that the existence of the holes has become public.
